Ten years later, i.e. in the year 1865, another Company having obtained powers to construct a dock at Cogan Pill, leased this dock to the Taff Vale Company. The Marquis of Bute then attempted to enforce the terms of the original agreement between himself and the Taff Vale Company, to the effect that either all goods passing over their system for shipment should be shipped at the West Bute Dock, or dues should be paid to him as though they had been. The Taff Vale Company won their case, but only by taking it right up to the House of Lords. Since that event the progress of the Penarth Dock, as the Cogan Pill Dock was called, has been continuous.' - [723] [716] [20190729]
1860 - The Building News and Architectural Review Periodical [547] [716] reported: The Tidal Harbour was constructed by Messrs. Rennie and Co., under the direction of Mr. Hawkshaw as chief engineer, and Mr. Dobson as resident ; under whose direction also the Penarth Dock abutting is being constructed by Messrs. Smith and Knight, contractors. The Penarth Tidal Harbour was opened in 1859, and is situate south-west of the entrance from Cardiff Roads ; and Penarth Dock previously mentioned as in the course of construction, will be on the site of Pilot's Cottage and Boat-building Yard, north-west of Penarth Head. The increasing size of shipping, affecting Cardiff as well as other parts, induces proprietors to build docks well out of the main. The probable cost of this dock will be £200,000 [equivalent to c.£24.9m in 2020], area about 15 acres. ![]() |
