May 1883 - Penarth Dock
The view taken in May 1883 from high ground behind the dock nearby the quarry, now disused. Square riggers crowd the dock awaiting their turn to be loaded with coal. A number of ships are anchored in the Penarth Roads in the distance awaiting entry to the ports of Cardiff and Penarth. [021]

The original photograph is held at the Glamorgan Archives in Leckwith, Cardiff. The definition is improved but the image has not been retouched or enhanced excepting the colourised version above. It is used as part of the Cardiff Waterways Map Project.

Jo, from the project, recently emailed (May 2015) and told me of progress and that:

We hope to have our Cardiff Waterways Map website up by the end of this year. Your website looks great, the Ely subway is really fascinating, we are also working on a project about disused spaces in Grangetown at the moment with Cardiff University architect students and hope to visit the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club to see the entrance.'

If I lived closer to Cardiff I would definitely volunteer to assist in the work and have given permission to use the Penarth Dock website for reference and, subject to third party copyright, use its images. I would like to wish them all the best of luck with their imitative project. [310] [312]
