| 1883 - An enhanced image, a colourised version, plus the original impressively detailed view of the Penarth Dock extension works looking eastward toward the four new coal tips dated the 2nd June 1883. The dock is packed with square-riggers bound for who knows where in the World and which appear to be levitating! Imagine the pressure of water acting on the earthworks and the potential outcome if it were to fail under the hydrostatic load. The hand written legend says "Penarth Dock Extension Works. June 2nd 1883 - Shewing the position of the 4 new coal tips - The Dock tapers to about 150 feet wide at the rear [or could be near] (west) end." [007] |
