Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - Some newspaper reports from the 1880's They were all, however, more or less sufferers by partial or complete damage. The captain had property amounting in value to about £180 on board, and this has been rendered almost totally useless. The Lonnie Burrill was one of the finest wooden ships trading at Penarth Dock, and belonged to Mr. William Burrill, of Yarmouth. She was only classed A1 at St. John's last year. Singularly enough, a sister ship was lying in the dock at the time. At two o'clock this (Friday) morning the fire still remained unextinguished, though several additional holes had been made in the deck, and the hose were kept playing on the flames, but apparently without any appreciable result." - Western Mail [036] 8th December 1889. • December 1889 - The Electric Light - "The electric light has been provided at Penarth Dock, and the installation has just been completed by Messrs J. B. Saunders and Company, electrical engineers, of Cardiff, to whom the work was entrusted by the directors. Around the entire dock twenty 2,000 candle arc lamps have been distributed, and these give a splendid light over the area which is covered. At each tip Edison-Swan lights are provided, two portable lamps, intended for use in ship's holds, being part of the equipment. A separate engine-house has been provided for the engines and dynamoes. The engines used are of Tangye's make, especially adapted for electric lighting. Three large dynamoes are employed for the work, two being used for the arc lights, the other for the incandescent circuit. The whole installation has been carried out under the supervision of Mr. T. Hurry Riches. Messrs Saunders and Company's representatives in charge of the work were Mr. Nisbet and Mr. W. E. O. Williams." - Barry Dock News [140] 20th December 1889 also - Engineering v.48 [627] 20th December 1889. [499]
