Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - Some newspaper reports from the 1890's

• January 1898 - Lad Drowned at Penarth - "On Thursday Ernest Williams, aged nineteen, of 24, Salisbury-road, Cathays, Cardiff, in the employ of Messrs. Eastman and Co., butchers, Cardiff, was sent to Penarth Dock with a quantity of meat to be put on board the steamship Laristan. Whilst ascending the ladder with a basket of meat on his shoulder he was seen to stumble and fall into the dock. Everything possible was done to rescue the man, but, as he did not rise to the surface, quite an hour elapsed before the body was recovered." Evening Express [135] 7th January 1898.

• May 1898 - Missions to Seamen Society - "The trial trip of the new Missions to Seamen screw steamer Eirene took place on Saturday, leaving Penarth Dock about 9.30 a.m. The party on board included a number of invited guests and several interested in the various departments of the vessel. The weather was very unpropitious, but the boat behaved excellently, and the trip was successful in every respect.

The Eirene is well suited for the mission work for which she has been built, being safe, swift, and spacious. She was built and engined at the yard of the Penarth Shipbuilding and Ship Repairing Company, by whom she was designed, and of which Mr. Monroe is the manager. At the close of the trial trip competent authorities in their various departments complimented Mr. Monroe upon the success of his work, and congratulated the Missions to Seamen Society upon having acquired such an excellent steamer. Dinner and tea were served on board during the trip." Evening Express [135] 23rd May 1898.

• July 1898 - Perilous Position - A Cardiff Pilot's Adventure - "Mr. John Berkeley, a Cardiff pilot of 31 years' standing, had a narrow escape on Saturday. He had taken out the ship Wooler from Penarth Dock, leaving her in the Roads, and was returning in a small sailing boat, when the latter capsized, and Mr. Berkeley and the boatman were thrown into the water, where they remained half an hour before they were picked up by a Newport pilot boat and landed at Barry." Evening Express [135] 20th July 1898.

• September 1898 - A Punt Race at Penarth - "A race open to the punts belonging to the Penarth Dock hobblers took place on Wednesday. The course run was from the Penarth beach to the upper buoy, around a ketch on the East Mud, in and around the dredger Ely, out and around the Hook Buoy, and back home to windward of the dredger Ely, all marks being left on the port hand. A fine breeze from the north-east, together with a smooth sea, enabled hundreds of spectators to view the race. The committee passed a resolution thanking Mr. Ashford for acting as starter and also for many members of the Penarth Yacht Club for the kindly interest shown.
