Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - Some newspaper reports from the 1870's • January 1870 - Penarth - Serious Accident - "On Thursday night a young man, whose name could not be ascertained, received a severe fall at the Penarth Dock Works. He fell a depth of thirty feet. When picked up it was found that he had sustained very severe spinal injuries. Little hope is entertained of his recovery.' The Western Mail [164] [361] 1st January 1870. • January 1870 - Greenwich Time by Telegraph - "One great improvement effected by the adoption of the telegraph by the Government is that uniform and accurate time will be secured in all towns. Greenwich time will be telegraphed daily to all telegraph stations in England, Scotland and Wales and post office clocks will be regulated thereby every morning. This will end the dispute which necessarily arises in so many places as to which shall be regarded as the standard of time - the railway station clock, the post-office clock, the parish church clock, or the town clock. The clocks at the new post-office at Cardiff, will be regulated at 10 o'clock every morning." Cardiff Times [019] [361] 8th January 1870.
with a view of increasing the facility for shipbrokers and others carrying on their business both at Cardiff and Penarth ; by establishing a rapid means of communication between the two places, and lastly by erecting a very spacious and commodious hotel on the side of the headland.
