Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - Some newspaper reports from the 1870's • February 1873 - The Great Strike in South Wales - The strike amongst the iron workers, colliers, and miners continues, and to all appearances is as far off adjustment as when it began, five weeks ago. Whatever may come of it it is not improbable that the strike will prove a serious blow to the iron trade of South Wales. Mr. Brogden's proposal for the double shift, which, at the time it was thought would lead to a speedy termination of the dispute, is uncompromisingly opposed by the unionists. . . The Illustrated London News had the above illustration in its issue with the subtitle of "The Strike in South Wales : Coal Famine in Merthyr : "Penn'orth of Coals."' Rationing of coal during the strike." Illustrated London News [121] 1st February 1873. |
