'Penarth - North End with Coal Tips' - A moment captured in time taken from the north end of the dock with enlargements. I think this is probably one of the best images of the daily working life of Penarth Dock ever taken! Again the dock is busy with ships of the wind and steam powered variety which are moored up to three abreast at the north quay. This postcard dates from 1904 or 1905, since the steel coal tip number 13 (the nearest is number 14) has not yet been installed but other steel tips are installed in the distance i.e. the 1883 wooden tips numbers 13 and 14 are still in position. Note the electric light to the left of the image. The sailing ship (right) is probably having her ballast removed and awaiting coaling since she is listing to starboard and high in the water. A steam powered dredger is moored at the northern quay as are a number the lighter boats used to service and supply the ships and port needs. A postcard which has pride of place within my Penarth Dock Collection. The enlargements have been colourised. [001]
