The effects of unloading ballast prior to taking on a load of coal in terms of stability of a sailing ship are demonstrated graphically in this photograph taken on 22nd May 1902. Sailing ships normally had to unload all their ballast prior to loading their next cargo, leaving the ship potentially vulnerable and unstable especially if the weather should change and high winds or rough seas follow in the meantime. The lower image has been colourised. [142] [150]

Carl Wehrley copyright assignment
The image and documentation of the "Westfield falling on the steamship Cranford" taken by Carl Wehrley of Windsor Road, Penarth is held at the National Archives. The document is a request for assignment of copyright to the Registering Officer Appointed by the Stationers' Company - received 9th June 1902. I was unable to find any newspaper report relating to the incident however. Does anyone have more information please? [142] [150]
