Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - Penarth's contribution to coal exports . . .

A poster advertising the South Wales Ports for quick despatch. Cardiff seems to be capitalising on Penarth's success in expediency of loading ships!

The UK provided approx. 30% of the Worlds’ coal in 1897 and maintained its global influence on energy markets throughout the period. Given the size of the UK it seems incredible to suggest that we were for over half a century one of the largest energy producers in the World!

The sidings leading to the coal tips on the southern side of the dock. Lewis Methyr colliery trucks fill the sidings.

This coal production table of the period 1897 until 1907 is the basis for the graphs on the following pages which were published in the 1908 South Wales Coal Annual [039] in order to illustrate the part that Penarth played in the performance of the South Wales ports during the first decade, or so, of the 20th century.

To recap: Penarth had only 8.4% of the total dock area of the Port of Cardiff (of which it was a part) but was responsible in 1907 for shipping an incredible 18% of the total exports AND charges per ton were 37.5% less than at Cardiff, Barry, Newport and Port Talbot AND in general turn around times were much quicker. What an achievement!
