pontoon for the Mount Stuart Dry Docks at Cardiff
pontoon for the Mount Stuart Dry Docks at Cardiff
The pontoon for the Mount Stuart Dry Docks at Cardiff arriving from the builders in 1905. It is an off-shore, single wall type construction. The "shores" are the six steel arms which are currently resting on the deck. These will be turned from the 7 o'clock position over to the 3 o'clock position to moor the dock permanently to the quay. The arms permit the rise and fall of the pontoon to allow ships to be raised on her deck to enable access to the hull below the waterline. But this was not the first floating dock at Cardiff. Earlier, in 1890 an off-shore dock 268' - 9" (81.9m) long had been designed for Cardiff by Clark & Standfield which was extended in length by 55' - 7" (16.9m) in 1897. It has a combined lifting power of 2,500 + 402 = 2,902 tons. [020] [040]
