Upgrading coal tip at Penarth Dock
Upgrading coal tip at Penarth Dock

A photograph (with colourised version) of a replacement coal tip nearing the end of its construction phase. This is number 4 tip given its alignment with Grange Point on the northern shore of the river Ely and the cross-bracing design of the tip which is that of the East Ferry Road Engineering Company Limited. The date of this photograph is, therefore, late 1914 i.e. just after the outbreak of WWI.

The coal trucks in the distance are those of Powell Duffryn and the Albion Collieries. Powell Duffryn started shipping from Penarth during 1892. In the foreground are coal trucks of the Ocean Collieries. A barge carries materials for the construction works and the ferro concrete stage allows the coal trucks to enter at a higher level than the previous tip at this location. The additional height gained permits the efficient loading of much larger ships. [060]
