The visit of Edward VII to Cardiff in July 1907.
The above photograph is from the Glamorgan Archives and is of the visit of Edward VII to Cardiff in July 1907. The archive states that he visited Penarth Dock but I can find no firm record to confirm this statement. The purpose of the visit to South Wales was the opening of the Alexandra Dock at Cardiff ; a state occasion undertaken by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on the 13th July of that year. The King's Visit to Cardiff - The Royal Yacht 'Victoria' passing Penarth Head
'The King's Visit to Cardiff - The Royal Yacht 'Victoria' passing Penarth Head prior to entering Queen Alexandra Dock, Cardiff - June 1912.' This fine photographic record is accredited to L. E. Wehrley, Penarth whom I believe to be George Wehrley's elder brother Leopold Ernest Wehrley. He is recorded as being a railway clerk in the census of the previous year, so we all agree that it is an extremely good photo from an 'amateur'! The postcard complete with a halfpenny-stamp was posted in 1913 to an address in Runcorn, Cheshire. Another historic postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection ; together with a colourised version. [001]
