Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - The age of global trade and optimism . . .
A colourised view of Penarth Dock estimated to have been photographed around the turn of the century. In the foreground pitwood (pitprops) are piled up awaiting their loading to trucks for transportation to the colliery companies. They were likely to have been imported to Penarth Dock from the forests of the Baltic States. This practice gave a cargo to ships on the inward journey which were normally in ballast and filled coaltrucks on their return journey to the colliery which were normally empties.
