c. 1900 - Penarth Dock - A clear view of the Dock, the works of the Penarth Ship Building and Ship Repairing Company beyond, and the oil tanks of the Victoria Petroleum Company over on the Penarth and Ely Harbour Road. The photograph was taken from the path just below the limekilns looking toward tip No. 7 (left), the hydraulic accumulator adjacent to No. 6 tip, and tip No. 5 (right).
Distant, right of the photograph, may be seen two of the four Fielding and Platt tips situated at the northern quay of the basin, therefore, I can date this photograph as between the latter months of 1899, or early 1900, with a good degree of certainty. The third of these tips appears to be under construction.
Note the Missions to Seamen building at the lock-side between the dock and basin with the entrance to the subway to the left. The subway was opened about the same date as this photograph was taken. Also the hulk of a sailing vessel is to be seen at the riverside ; possibly a former warship.
Coal wagons with the identification letters 'PC' belonging to 'Philip Carl & Co.' of Cardiff await tipping, whilst empties on the return sidings have 'NN' or 'Nixon's Navigation,' and 'Rees & Co.' markings. An undated, un-posted, heritage postcard, with colourised enlargements, printed by Harvey Barton & Son, Ltd., of Bristol, and is held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20190916]
