Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - Some newspaper reports from the 1900's . . . • July 1900 - Man Drowned - 'About midnight on Friday last Henry Purse, employed on the dredger at Penarth Dock, was drowned under somewhat mysterious circumstances. The dredger was being towed out to sea by the tug Primrose, when one of the crew of the latter heard cries. Immediately the tug was put about and a search made, but nothing was then discovered. Subsequently Purse was missed, and up to noon on Wednesday his body had not been recovered, and it is concluded that he was drowned. Purse lived at 18, Dock-street, Cogan, and leaves a widow and several children. - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 6th July 1900. • July 1900 - Recovery of a Body - 'The body of the man, Henry Purse, of Cogan, whose death from drowning was reported in the Barry Dock News last week, was washed ashore near the Boat Club-house on Penarth Beach on Friday last. It was removed to the Esplanade Hotel pending the coroner's investigation.' - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 13th July 1900.
