Map of Penarth Dock showing Pumping Engine House

The western end of dock showing the blockwork adjacent to the pumping engine house which is a gradual incline from below water level to the quayside. This was most probably constructed at the time of the dock extension in 1883 and was intended for boat building and repairs. The pontoon required eight slots be incorporated into the northern quay wall for the lower booms to rise and fall in as the pontoon is in use. Following the installation of the pontoon, the offices of the new engineering works were built over this incline at the southern side of the dock; but they were situated on the top of a vertical quay wall. How and When did they modify the masonry for these substantial constructions is the question? [010]
