The “Ardgryfe”, a freighter of length 415 feet and 8,500 tons laden under repair on the pontoon on the 11th March 1911. She was raised on the pontoon in only 55 minutes according to the 'Engineering' magazine Volume 91. Note the workers near the stern of the ship painting the lower hull and the group of eight unknowns posing near to the bow for the photograph of the pontoon – see inset on left. The image brings a sense of scale to the undertaking. Note that the pontoon is capable of handling ships which are longer than the pontoon, in this case some 35 feet (10.7 m). [062] |
