View of Penarth Dock and Pontoon c.1913
A postcard image taken by Ernest T. Bush of the Penarth Dock with an unknown ship under repair upon the pontoon. Number 13 tip constructed in 1904 by Tannett Walker & Co. of Leeds with its associated hydraulic accumulator is in the foreground. Coal trucks of the Cory Brothers and Lockets await loading in sequence on the sidings. [300] [391]

Penarth Pontoon c.1913
In this colourised enlargement, the collier sailing up the River Ely at speed is clear. In the distance are oil tanks on the northern bank of the river estuary, whilst across the Penarth Flats, the coal tips at Cardiff Docks and the blast furnaces of the East Moors iron and steel works are clearly visible. This is one of the fine views featured within an interesting book 'Penarth in old picture postcards' by David Ings - both volumes being highly recommended! [300] [391]
