The day after a bomb hit Penarth Dock - 1941

The north quay of Penarth Dock on 2nd July 1941. 'The day after a landmine was dropped from a plane blowing up the railway lines.' Bruce Wallace writes in his family history that his father, Brian Wallace recalled the event:- 'In 1941, he remembered walking home as an air raid started. Night had just fallen, and he could see the search lights shining in the sky as a walked along Salop Street. He could also hear the bombs dropping nearby. They were trying to hit Penarth and Cardiff docks.' [367]

Given that within a few hundred metres, the oil storage tanks on the north bank of the River Ely are situated and that the installation is listed upon the 1939 Luftwaffe map of Penarth Dock, River Ely Tidal Harbour and Grangetown Gas Works, etc. ; well, just maybe the Hun missed!

track layout Penarth Dock - landmine 1941
A portion of the track layout plan of Penarth Dock held in the Wiltshire and Swindon Archive. It is stamped January 1923 and is a drawing office copy of the GWR at their Swindon works. The arrow indicates the approximate position of the landmine hit which I have estimated from the alignment of features shown in the photograph. [301]
