Volume Four - An Era of Change, Uncertainty, Depression & War - Some thoughts regarding the apparent reluctance of Pounds to remove the pontoon . . .

You may recall that the Penarth Times [101] reported in 1963: “The Inner Dock is sealed off by an earthwork bund with water still in it. The dock gates are out of action”.

May I suggest that it was a selection of the foregoing factors which thwarted any attempt to remove the pontoon by Pounds and/or that they got cold feet; the delay in acting could have been a tactic to mitigate or frustrate the contract with Penarth Dock Engineering Limited. Either way it is pure conjecture on my part and also probably libellous!

Julie recalls that the entire subject was taboo within the administrative offices of the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited from c.1964 and onwards. Maybe there are the bundles of documents in the vaults of Mr. Gelderd’s offices pending inspection!

01/07/2014 - A new post on the forum by Villis reports that he witnessed explosives being used at the time of the pontoon's demise. Does anyone have any recollection of this or know the reasons for using explosives at that time? Please post your comments on the forum. This fact had generated a great deal of interest.

A Lloyd's List Law Report details the proceedings and judgement within [1963] Volume 1.
