Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Five - The Age of Decline & Crass Stupidity - Some fools had cunning plans! . . .

Penarth Dock in the mid-1970's.

An image taken in the early to mid-1970's with that damn dam in the distance. A perimeter fence has been installed around the landfill site at the head of the dock as a reminder that both household and industrial waste was dumped there without the environmental controls we have in place today.

Also clear are the remains of the ferro-concrete stages built on top of the original stone jetties. Number 4 is in the foreground, the plans of which dated April 1913, are at the National Archives. [142] The stages are installed in pairs, being at number 4 & 5 tips and in the distance, installed on top of the original stone jetties of numbers 12 & 13 tips. The red brick clock tower and offices of the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited are distant with Price Brother's joinery works behind. [069]

Penarth Dock - 1970's

Another image taken in the early to mid-1970's with that damn dam in the distance. In the foreground of this image the capstan has been removed but the mooring posts remain. The hydraulic capstan mechanism was mounted within the massive stone cap at the edge of the dock which is probably 2 feet thick. The Billy Banks estate peers at the sad scene from the escarpment!
