Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Five - The Age of Decline & Crass Stupidity - Draining the dock - then oops! . . .

1985-86 - The dam constructed and the new marina filled with water.
1985-86 - The dam constructed and the new marina filled with water. Work is underway to cap the waste site and level the area behind the dam. The industrial estate is gradually being demolished. [000] [002] [20171207]

1987 - Penarth Marina

An aerial view taken in 1987 looking toward Penarth Head. The basin and remainder of the dock has been converted to the Portway Marina and the rubbish tip is shortly to the named in honour of Lord Plymouth! The road on the left will honour the "Terra Nova" and a new road to the right will honour Marconi. Hmm!

In the River Ely, bottom left, you can make out the remains of the slipway and gridiron of the Penarth Ship Building and Ship Repairing Company. The stone supports for coal tips number 1 to 5 remain as reminder of the lost heritage. The construction of the Cardiff Bay barrage has not yet commenced. The image is courtesy of Penarth Framing Services [113] with many thanks for allowing its use on this website. Please respect their copyright.
