Cross-section of River Ely subway - depth under the river.
The longitudinal cross-sectional drawing of the path of the subway in relation to Spring and Neap tides, high and low water levels and an Ordnance datum level. The gradient was quite steep at 1:7 and I recall you could get an exhilarating speed up on your Raleigh bicycle (especially without working brakes and lights) in one direction but a little slower going uphill; it was then that a cold shiver ran down your spine as you do moved your head from side to side to dodge the light bulbs, aware that a moments loss of concentration may result in you headbutting a bulb that had burnt out!
