Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The subway under the river Ely story . . .

In February 2016 a gentleman named Glyn Scott residing in Cardiff emailed me and stated 'I have just seen your site on the foot tunnel. You may be interested in the attached image of the entrance to the tunnel. My father used to use the tunnel. If one was on a bicycle the fee was 2d to go through.'

One of the entrances to the Penarth subway under the River Ely, allegedly as the last man through leaves on the day of its closure to the public.

He added: 'My father was born in his aunt’s house in what was then Dock Road in Penarth in 1915. He then lived with his parents in Adamsdown but traveled over to Penarth to see his aunt and uncle, using the foot tunnel. In 1976 I was a telephone networks planner and Penarth was in my patch. I remember the Penarth end of the tunnel being excavated. I had a picture of the revealed tunnel snaking down under the river. I lent it to someone and never got it back. My father’s uncle, T.W. Parkman, was a labourer on the dock and later became a coal trimmer. His brother is mentioned on the Penarth war memorial. I have attached a couple of files. Regards . . Glyn.'

The story of his father and brother is appended to the chapter dedicated to those Locals; the ordinary and extraordinary characters . . .
