Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The subway under the river Ely story . . .

1986 - Ely River Tubular Subway taken by Cardiff County Council.
1986 - A photograph of the 'Ely River Tubular Subway' taken by Cardiff County Council. The notes state 'Opened in 1899, the subway linked Penarth Docks to Ferry Road under the river Ely. It was finally bricked up in September 1963.' The opening ceremony was, however, held on the 14th May 1900. I believe this to be the bricked-up entrance to the tunnel at the Ferry Road side of the river with the remains of the white glazed walls of the toll house apparent.
