1878 OS map of the Cogan area
An 1878 OS map of the Cogan area. At this time the docks have not yet been extended and the Barry Railway is not mapped. Cogan Pill Brick Works is indicated as is Hewell Street; interestingly, Pill Street is not yet named. Dock Street, running parallel, has a few houses built but is also unnamed. Penarth Dock and Harbour Railway Station and the railway extension to Penarth opened in the same year, 1878. [010]

Cogan Pill Brick Works map
The same map enlarged to show the extent of the brick works which was situated in the recreational field. The area coloured in blue is interesting. Is this the remnants of the Cogan Pill, a brick pond or just an area of saturated land? The location of the Station Hotel at the intersection of Pill Street and Windsor Road may also be seen. [010]
