1893 - "Cardiff and Penarth Steam Ferry Company. - On Saturday morning last, the new steamer Kate, built by Messrs. Bow and M'Lachlan, Paisley, for the Cardiff and Penarth Steam Ferry Company, arrived at Cardiff and was moored in the West Dock. She is the same size as the Iona, belonging to the same company, but will provide very superior accommodation for passengers; deck salons having been constructed both for and aft allows a very much larger promenade deck than that which the other boats of the company possess." Barry Dock News [140] 22nd September 1893.

1893 - "Why does the captain of the Kate steer such a circuitous route?" said a clever young artillery officer to the skipper of the ferry-boat Iona, running between Penarth and Cardiff - "The Kate was not built to run over land," was the dry reply." Western Mail [164] 28th September 1893.

1893 - "The New Ferry Steamer - The new ferry steamer 'Kate' was put on her station on Tuesday morning last, and will henceforward be in regular work. In the squally weather of this morning her saloon accommodation was much appreciated, giving far more shelter than is obtainable on other boats." Barry Dock News [140] 29th September 1893.

1895 - The second 'Kate' was registered under the owner manager John T. Davies of 30, Stuart Square, Cardiff. The vessel's vital statistics were 89ft. - 6in. in length x 18ft. - 1in. breath x 5ft. - 0in. depth. She was 14 net tons, 90 tons gross, and her paddles were driven by a 38 horsepower steam engine. By 1897, her port of registry was no longer Cardiff but, Londonderry, being registered under new owners. Although still on the Mercantile Marine Registry for 1915 she was broken up during that same year. [630]
