1899 - River Ely Ferry, Penarth Dock
A photograph dating from 1899 (complete with tea or coffee stains) not the 1880's as per the 'Gathering of the Jewels' website states and secondly, I don't believe that two men worked a windlass to propel this ferry. The Missions to Seamen building may be seen to the rear at Penarth Docks. I date this image to 1899 on the basis that the first of the four moving coal tips were installed in that year and completed during 1900. The subway opened in 1900 so the ferry probably became redundant overnight and the service terminated a few years later. The chain may just be seen emerging from the river and resting on the jetty where it would have been anchored above the high water line. [007]

1899 - River Ely chain ferry, Penarth Dock
An enlarged and colourised view of the ferry showing, what appears to be a vertical steam boiler and winding engine with the exhaust duct through the roof of the wooden canopy. A navigation light is attached to the funnel so that the steam and smoke potentially obliterates the light dependant upon the wind direction! [007]
