Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage and legacy

Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Crossing the River Ely . .

The 'Iona' as the 'Penarth Ferry' in this lovely postcard view as she passes the Bute Dock Offices, Cardiff. Another fine postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection. It is from the Cardiff Series of postcards published by Max Ettlinger & Co. Ltd., of London E.C. and New York. [001]

Below is an illustration from William Turner's book 'The Port of Cardiff' being a guidebook published in 1882 which perhaps assists us to date the photograph subtitled 'Pier Head and Bute Docks Offices (from the South).' [625] [20180105]

Pier Head and Bute Docks Offices (from the South)

The tram service from St. Mary Street to Pier Head, Bute Docks, was timed to meet the Penarth Ferry 'Iona' in the mid-1880's. I wonder if those seated are awaiting boarding the ferry or just loitering about? The lower image has been colourised. [000] [002] [20210124]
