Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Crossing the River Ely . .
The 'new' 'Kate' was sold to McCrea and McFarland of Londonderry in April 1896 and the 'Iona' continued the service on a reduced basis until October 1903 and was broken up in 1913. [154] In the Summer of 1964, Mr. Frank Dodge wrote an article 'In Retrospect' which is included within 'Ship Ahoy' [192] magazine: "In the early days of the century, before transport between Cardiff and its environs was fully developed, we regularly used to travel by the old 'Kate' and 'Iona', two small double-ended ferries which used to operate between Penarth and Pier Head, Cardiff at a fare of 2d. each way. These grubby little boats provided one of the regular routes for the commuters from Penarth to the business section of Cardiff's docks in their heyday."
1903 - The Penarth Ferry Boat formerly ran from the Pier to Penarth Beach, first to a landing stage, and later to Penarth Pier. The ferry was discontinued in October 1903. Cardiff Records Vol. VI [624] 1911.
