Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Crossing the River Ely . .
A photograph dating from c.1898 of the chain ferry at low water waiting to cross from the northern Ferry Road jetty to the Penarth Dock jetty. The chain may be seen at the waters-edge. Just to the left is the steam ferry jetty which eased boarding at high tide. [002]
An enlarged and colourised section of the above image showing the ferry and jetties in closer detail. Directly behind the northern jetty is the toll house for the subway which looks to be in a state of advanced construction but with scaffolding still in place. The subway was opened in 1900. [002]
