Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Crossing the River Ely . .

Well, before the system was adopted an old ferryman used to row us across, and it is of the old captain and engineer and aforetime ferryman I wish to speak, for I ran up against him some time ago in one of our large charitable institutions, as before intimated, and got into conversation with him.

He humorously told me that the reason why he was here was that when he was a ferryman for the T.V.R. he only had one pocket, into which went all of the takings. This he emptied and handed over in its entirety to the company. He said if he had had two pockets, and kept something back, he would not now be looking after the donkey engine in the workhouse. He told me a dramatic tale of a strong freshet on the Ely, when the chain broke, and he and his unwieldy craft, without oars or anchor, was carried away into the Channel, and he got wrecked on Cefn-y-Wrach Shoal, from which he was soon afterwards rescued." Western Mail [164] 1st June 1917.

The story of the subway is at Volume 6 Chapter 2. I am searching for records relating to the demise of the chain ferry and technical information about it use and construction etc. - assistance welcome.
