Coal tips Ely Tidal Harbour, Penarth
Coal tips Ely Tidal Harbour, Penarth
A photograph (plus a colourised version) taken in the mid 1920's showing tips numbers 1 and 2 and the extent of the wooden structures standing since 1859. By this date most of the stone pitching which lined the river bank has been lost. The ship loading at number 1 tip is the 'Ferric', a Portishead coal boat owned by Osborn & Wallis Limited of Bristol. The little ships were loaded for stability when they were safely sat on the river bed. Note the depth of drop between the end of the chute and the ship's hold. [025]

A close up of number 2 coal tip which provides more detail of the construction employed and the claggy river Ely mud. [025]
