1955 - 1960's? - The Victoria Wharf Cottage situated at the rear of the warehouses being almost on an island situated at the bend of the meandering River Ely. The cottage was probably the residence of a caretaker during the working years of the South Wales Public Wharf, Warehouse & Transit Company Limited.
The upper aerial photograph is held at the National Museum of Wales and attributes the photo to H. Tempest Limited and is dated 27th October 1955. [Museum item number : 2016.89/1 and also under item 86.34I/3013] [629]
The photograph of the cottage is, I believe, attributable to my friend, Mr. Ben Salter ; many thanks Ben for recording this heritage building for posterity. The date is unknown but probably 1960's. I wonder what stories it could tell about life at the Victoria Wharf? [069]
The OS map surveyed 1878 to 1879 has no indication of the cottage being in existence at that date. The OS map was revised in the period 1898 to 1899, and incorporates the rebuilding of the warehouse destroyed by the great fire of 1888. It therefore, seems logical that the cottage was built around the time of the warehouse re-construction since it is clearly indicated on the revised map. The map was revised again in 1915 and was published in 1920, and it is this which provides the clearest layout of the site and is therefore reproduced above. [010] [398]
