Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The Penarth Harbour Dock and Railway - Railway World Article - 1964 . . . A new type of freight train is now appearing a couple of times a week on the Harbour line. This brings petroleum gas in rail tanks from Thames Haven refinery to Grangetown Gas Works, which can now be reached only via the incline to the low level lines at Ferry Road. As it is a long train, it requires special care in working over the unprotected road crossing. On the passenger side, the recent branch line closures have included the Clarence Road branch, where rebuilding of station buildings was completed only a short time ago. Nevertheless the Whitsun holidays brought the usual excursions and special trains through Grangetown, including an excursion from Paddington to Barry Island hauled by a "Western" class diesel and others from Evesham, Bristol, Cheltenham, Pontypool Road and Newport hauled by diesel locomotives or worked by diesel multiple-units. A number of diesel multiple-unit relief and empty trips to and from the Taff Vale section were worked non-stop between Treforest and Barry Island via Waterhall Junction.
