Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - Reconstruction of Three Tips - 1912 - 17 . . . Handrails are to be fitted on each side of all ladders. All stanchions to be of wrought-iron. Hand holes must be cut in any covering plate where necessary ; such hand holes to be provided with covers made fast by suitable means to the plate. The whole of the machinery for the tips and cranes to be readily accessible, so that any part can be replaced, or the glands repacked, in the most convenient manner. The wire ropes are to be obtained from approved makers, who must supply a test certificate. If it is necessary to make splices they must be inspected and approved by the Locomotive Superintendent, or his Representative, before lapping. All sheaves are to be of ample diameter, to be turned smooth, and to have self-oiling arrangements, fitted with oil reservoirs. All cylinders must be fitted with air-cocks, which must be placed at the highest point of same. Drain cocks, of approved pattern, with a passage in them of sufficient diameter are to be fitted at the lowest point of the cylinders. All tiers or lines of pipes that are put upon the tip must also be fitted with air-cocks at their highest points, and drain-cocks at the lowest points, and pipes must be placed in such a way as to render them capable of being drained perfectly dry by means of these air-cocks and drain-cocks. Should it be found necessary, in the run of any pipes, to make a bend in them, then an air-cock must be put in above the bend and a drain-cock below it, so as to prevent the possibility of water lodging there. Efficient means of lubrication are to be provided for all rams, guides, pulleys, chains and other working parts. Special lubricators are to be provided for lubricating the jib-head sheaves and other parts difficult of access. No painting whatever, of any part of the Tip structure, or other accessories, is to be done until the work has been examined and passed by the Locomotive Superintendent, or his Representative. After this, the painting is to be carried out as follows:- The whole of the wrought steel and iron works must be thoroughly scraped and cleaned before the various parts are put together, and after being inspected by the Locomotive Superintendent or his Representative, the surface of all parts which, when put together in the Works, will come in contact, must then be painted with two coats of pure ground red lead, in pure boiled linseed oil ; |
