He came to Cardiff with his parents (father being John Edwards (1803-1864)) in 1844 and started in 1849 as a Clerk in the Goods Department of the then Taff Vale Railway Company (the Railway having been opened in 1840). Until 1857 he was employed in the Goods and Traffic Departments and then he was promoted to the office of the secretary of the Company. In 1860 he was promoted to the Chief Goods Manager's Department and was made Goods Manager in 1862. In 1866 he was appointed Chief Audit Accountant and Cashier, being made Secretary of the Company in 1900, which position he was holding when he died in 1912, having served the Company sixty three years.

Between 1870 and 1912 he was, in addition to his railway appointments, firstly an auditor, then a director and finally the Chairman of the Principality Building Society, Cardiff.
