George Fisher - (1809-1891)

However, his last years were somewhat overshadowed by the struggle between an influential group of shareholders dissatisfied with the management of the Company and the Chairman and Board of Directors. This conflict culminated in May 1891, shortly after George Fisher's death, in the publication of a highly critical report on the Company's management and operating practices by Messrs Swarbrick (former General Manager of the Great Eastern Railway) and Tomlinson (One time Locomotive Superintendent of the TVR and then highly respected President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers), which led directly to the resignation of Chairman James Inskip and the Board of Directors en masse in June 1891.

George Fisher died at his home in Radyr on 3 May 1891, aged 82. he had been suffering from a cold for about five weeks, but had been into Cardiff on two occasions to attend to Company business. However, his condition worsened on the Saturday and he died at 8 o'clock on the Sunday evening. He was buried at the New Cemetery, Cardiff, on 6 May 1891.

In addition to his professional activities, he was for many years a Member of Cardiff Town Council and Chairman of Radyr School Board, as well as a County Magistrate.

For railway historians, perhaps George Fisher's most lasting contribution is his series of report books, held at the Public Record Office, which record his views on a vast range of engineering and operational questions affecting the TVR over the period 1846-1883. these provide an extremely valuable insight not only into the history of the TVR, but also into the mind of a great railwayman.
