Penarth beach
Penarth gardens

Two wonderful examples of lithographic art showing Penarth Beach and the Windsor Gardens, borrowed from a book in my growing collection, the Rock's Royal Cardiff Cabinet Album. Given that the pier is not yet built it must date the images from the early 1890's or late 1880's. Contrast these views of prosperity; the everyday lives of those who became rich as a result of the sacfifices of the people who sailed and tended the very ships awaiting their cargoes of coal to be loaded at Penarth and Cardiff docks and captured in the images off-shore in the Penarth Roads. Written In the flyleaf of the book in a ladies hand is the following merry ditty:

He tried her on the sofa
He tried her in the chair
He tried on the window sill
and couldn't do it still
He tried her this and that way
and oh, how I did laugh
to see the many ways he tried
to take her photograph - Anon.
