Customs House at Penarth Dock
Customs House at Penarth Dock

A view of the Customs House taken in June 1972 a few years after the end of my apprenticeship at the other end of the dock. It was used a club, I think it was a Conservative Club but would welcome correction here if anyone can recall. The building to the left of the Customs House are the former Board of Trade, Mercantile Marine Offices which by this date were converted for use as residential flats. The lower image has been colourised. [069]

GWR tenacy map Penarth Dock

Another section of the c.1928 GWR Tenancy Map of Penarth Dock showing the entrance to the dock with its chevron arrangement of sea lock gates to the basin. The Customs House is indicated as is the Marine Hotel, the Pier and a Boat House. Dock Road, the steep hill at the side of the Customs House has not yet been constructed and in place of it is a gentler climb up the cliff, a sweeping road that adjoins Paget Place.

Lessee number 70 was Mrs. E. Neale from May 1918 for a term of 30 years, whereas lease number 51 was assigned to Messrs T. A. H. Noel & Co. for a term of 9½ years from December 1923. [001] [301]
