Penarth - 1920's-1930's
A sepia tinted view of Penarth Esplanade and pier by Judges' Limited of Hastings, England. When the pier was constructed, back in 1895, it was 750 feet (228.6 m) in length but has been hacked by 100 feet (- 30.5m) today. Does anyone know why and when please? The marina building, an Art Deco concrete structure, was opened in 1930 but was under utilised because apparently some clever officials didn't think that patrons were likely to require a heating system! Maybe they felt there was sufficient heat generated for the young Penarthians by their dancing of the Charleston all night - eh???!! [001] [322]

Penarth Pier - Marina
A colourised close up taken from the above postcard (from my Penarth Dock Collection) showing the marina building with the coal tips and iron and steel complex of the Cardiff Docklands distant. Between that and the pier are the lookout towers and their stairway connecting the Penarth Head Fort and Coastal Battery above. On the esplanade are a number of vintage vehicles but not a single parking warden or yellow line is to be seen! [001] [322]
