Christmas Greetings from Penarth
Penarth Pier

Two views - looking at them looking at you!

upper image - Hearty Christmas Greetings from Penarth. A used postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection but the postage stamp has been removed and the date of posting is therefore not known. Its from Kathleen to Master Ernest of Maindee, Newport expressing Best Wishes for Xmas and the New Year. Which year is lost, since no doubt the writer and recipient are no longer with us. lower image - A postcard from the Beaufort Series, Bristol, dating prior to 1907 when a new pavilion was built at the far end of the pier. The paddle steamer is a twin funnel vessel of the White Funnel Fleet so it could be 'Ravenswood' or perhaps 'Britannia'. The groups of people watching from the beach appear to be fascinated and completely immersed in the activity at the far end of the pier.

A similar reaction may be seen even today when P.S. 'Waverley' departs on one her summertime trips. A few years ago I spent an entire day on a trip down the North Devon coast, landing at Lundy. The view was great from the bar onboard and the Guinness was just at the right temperature. I just remember being assisted by Julie to walk along the pier to the car at the end of a long and well watered day. I highly recommend the excursion but only in good weather otherwise you may spill your beer! [000] [001]
