Another postcard (plus colourised version) from my Penarth Dock Collection of the Alexander Park at Penarth. The rear of the Esplanade Hotel is behind the bandstand and the baths may be seen with the pier complete with departing paddle steamer. Posted in August 1907, Gladys says she on holiday in Pontypool and just visiting Penarth. I think I would prefer to stay in Penarth for a while if I had the choice! [000] [001]

The band concerts pleased many who visited but one of the local house owners, one Mr. Brain of Brain's Brewery who lived at Pyke-Thompson's house, Plymouth road, complained about the noise and the miserable condition of the park. Maybe he had taken too much Red Dragon and had a hangover.

A few years ago went into a pub in Cardiff and asked for a pint of Brain's Red Dragon. The bemused barmaid called down the bar to her supervisor, 'Do we have any Red Dragon?' to which the reply was 'No! but we do have RD' I paused for a moment and muttered, 'Okay, I'll have to make do with RD then'!
