Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Moments captured in time

Entrance to Penarth Pier
The lovely thing about collecting period postcards is that not only do the images provide a snapshot, a 'moment in time', captured forever for future generations to wonder about but also the text provides an almost voyeuristic insight into the lives and thoughts of the characters who visited and stayed awhile to admire Penarth. This postcard is addressed to a Miss Farrall who's address was care of (c/o) Mrs Montford of Broad Street, Ludlow. It reads, 'Dear Mollie, sorry as I have not wrote to thank you . . .' Unfortunately, some vandal has removed the postage stamp and thus the date of posting has been lost but I would estimate it to be after 1905 and prior to 1909. [000] [001]

Enlarged sections of the postcard showing the retail establishments at each side of the pier entrance. The people pose as the photographer clicks the shutter open to capture a true piece of everyday life at the Penarth esplanade and pier. The Court Comedy Concert Company are performing at the end of the pier. It is interesting to see the portraits of ladies attached to the railings etc. which seem to be for sale. An advert for the 'Gwalia' and 'Devonia' indicates that the Barry Railway Company paddle steamers are regularly calling at the pier in competition to P. & A. Campbell's White Funnel Fleet. Both steamers were built and launched on the Clyde during 1905 and were in service in April and May respectively. [000] [001]
