On the way back from Hartland Point we stop off for a while at Steep Holm. The postcard was given to me by a friend to be included within the Penarth Dock Collection. The lower image has been colourised.
Interestingly, on the rear of the card at the top left is the instruction 'Stick any value Steep Holm stamp here to carry your card to the mainland' whilst on the top right hand side it states 'Fix a normal Post Office stamp here, for the mainland postage onward from Weston-super-Mare'.
There is also interesting printed text on the rear of the postcard:-
'The ruins of an 1832 gentleman's residence and Victorian inn on Steep Holm in the middle of the Bristol Channel were being rebuilt between 1983-90 as a warden's depot and lookout. The two wings of the building stood to three storeys until blown up by the Royal Engineers in 1941. The two storey replacement has been designed by the island's warden, Rodney Legg, with advice from Fred Pitfield, who worked with photographer Colin Graham to produce this visualisation of the finished result. The island was bought in 1976 as a nature reserve memorial to naturalist Kenneth Allsop and is visited by small boats from Weston-super-Mare on Saturdays and bank holidays from April to October [bookings telephone Wincanton (0963) 32583].'
