A colourised view of the Kymin built around the turn of the 19th century. An enlargement taken from the postcard on the previous page. The hill is notorious for accidents in the days when brakes were not so efficient and reliable as this newspaper report from 1907 suggests. [001]
The Penarth Cyclist Trap - Another Beach Hill Mishap - 'On Sunday afternoon a serious bicycling accident occurred on Beach-hill, Penarth. It appears that William Jenson, described as in the employment of Messrs Thompson and Co., Cardiff Docks, was riding down Beach-hill towards the Esplanade, when he lost control of his machine, though, it was stated, one of the brakes being faulty. He dashed over the brow of the hill and collided with the wooden railings surrounding the residence of Mr. H. Snell. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and conveyed in a hackney carriage belonging to Mr. Matthews to the surgery of Dr. Boyle, where it was discovered that he was suffering from a severe scalp wound and concussion of the brain. He was afterwards driven to his home at William-street, Docks, cardiff. So many accidents have occurred on this hill within recent years that it is a matter of some surprise that the local District Council do not make further provision to warn cyclists and others of its extremely dangerous character.'
