Alfred Sisley - 'A Cardiff Shipping Lane' - 1897 An oil on board paining held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims, Reims, France. Alfred was born in Paris and became a friend of Monet. He and his partner, Eugenié Lescouezec, and their two children came to the UK to get married; which they did in Cardiff Town Hall during August 1897 (Sisley had dual French and UK nationality). He, or they, didn't like Cardiff very much so ended up in lodgings at Penarth for a few weeks. They were both dying of cancer and wished to legitimise their children hence the marriage. Sisley fell in love with Penarth and painted the view above which is part of a series of six paintings about Penarth. At the end of summer they returned to France where his wife died within a year and he succumbed three months later in January 1899. [444] [445]
