Lionel Walden - 'Cardiff Docks' - 1896 - I just adore this oil painting; the smell of the sulphurous steam and smoke combined with the clanking of the coal truck couplings as the engine takes up the slack on a blustery evening. It is a sound and steamy experience that stays with you all your life! Lionel Walden (1862 - 1933) was born in the US and studied art in Paris. He lived for a while at Flushing near Falmouth, Cornwall and visited Cardiff where he painted a number of maritime and industrial records of Cardiff including his highly evocative 'Steel Works, Cardiff at Night'. The painting above is held at the Muse d'Orsay in Paris. [450]
