Richard Short - (1841 - 1919) - 'Cardiff Docks with Penarth Head' - also named 'Lighthouse outside Cardiff Docks' at the National Museum of Wales. The 1915 OS map of the area indicates the location of the lighthouse with its fixed white light, next to which is an 'Old Station' and an 'Old Pier'; the old station probably refers to a old coal tip. In the distance is the entrance to Penarth Dock under Penarth Head complete with the distinctive tower of the 1865 St. Augustine's church atop. [439]
Richard was born in 1841 at St. Ives on the Cornish coast and had a maritime family heritage. He came to Cardiff around 1900 and became renowned as a maritime artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy. The Welsh National Museum of Wales at Cardiff holds five of his works. |
